SUMMARY REFLECTION

The story of Tata Selo by Rogelio Sikat is about an impoverished old man who murders the owner of his land. To begin with, this story depicts societal inequality in our society. An inequity in which your argument is invalidated if you are impoverished. The story also depicts police officers mistreating suspects. Tata Selo was attacked by the "Hepe" multiple times in the story since "Kabesa" gave him his position. It is reminiscent of all the cruelty and killings committed by officials from various governments in the Philippines. This novella also depicts a slice of life as a farmer who does not own the land. There are still a lot of this case in the Philippines in now age especially lands owned by big families.

Reflection

After reading the article, I believe that we should value our possessions more. We are really lucky not to be subjected to such torture at the hands of greedy landowners and nobility. It also makes me think about how unfair life can be at times. People who only wish to live a nice life are often forced to do things against their choice. It also makes me wonder if doing something right in the heat of the moment is still right. As a young student striving to be an engineer, I don't believe there is anything I can do right now, but as a person living in the Philippines, where our forefathers battled for our independence, I must raise awareness about issues such as injustice and abuse.

moral lesson

he moral lesson of the story is that “AS LONG AS THERE IS POWER, THE POOR WILL ALWAYS STRUGGLE” I have thought of this, because of the scene where tata Selo is being tormented or being hurted by a person who trusts the killed Kabesa.

In real life, as I read Tata Selo's narrative, I realised that as long as there is corruption in anyone, rich or poor, there will be an ongoing cycle of it due to the sense of vengeance and unfairness that they acquire in life. Also, there are still upper-class persons who fight alongside the lower-class people, such as Chel Diokno, who works for Filipino citizens' human rights, and former Miriam Defensor Santiago, who drafted the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, among many others. People like them are desperately required in real life because they are viewed as the hero or protagonist who stands up to corrupt authorities or antagonist that fights for the justice of low-class people and high-class people in the society.

The term justice refers to having a fair treatment in society for everyone, regardless of social class. Justice applies to everyone because of the law that is incorporated in it. However, this is not the case in practise. Similarly to the story of Tata Selo, the high-class people, or "Kabesa," abuse their power and are favoured by the authorities who implement the justice system, endangering and making the life of the low-class people, or "Tata Selo," harsher, feeling injustice, and hopeless to fight for their rights, which leads to committing a crime, in this case, murder. With the constant abuse of authority by these upper-class persons, the cycle of criminality in both the lower and upper classes persists.

Tata Selo's story recounts the sadness of a farmer who commits a crime after being abused by someone more powerful than him, only to be thrown to the fail. I feel empathy and sadness for his situation of having to murder someone who is making his life worse. Even though murdering someone is immoral, there should be a broader view of his circumstances leading up to that occurrence in order to feel Tata Selo's pain at the hands of the Kabesa. Furthermore, the experience of having to take away everything from you, Tata Selo, exemplifies the power abuse that the high-class people instilled in the low-class people as a result of their favours in these matters.
